HISTORY of LJUBLJANA

2000 BC, the marshes surrounding the region of our modern-day Ljubljana began to be colonized by the first populations living in wooden buildings on stilts. These men lived by fishing, hunting but also primitive agriculture. Through boats made from tree trunks they could move inside the swamps. For the following period the area was a crossing point for numerous populations. During the Roman Empire Ljubljana was called Emona. Ljubljana itself was first mentioned in the first half of the 12th century. Situated in the middle of a trade route between the northern Adriatic sea and the Danube region, it was strategically important. Throughout its history the city has been influenced by its geographical position, between German, Slavic and Latin culture.

IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL IN LUBLJANA

The largest city of Slovenia and the capital. Ljubljana, a city that you can trust when it comes to safety. It is very safe for anyone to walk alone day and night on the streets. I visit it at least once a month due to work, and I felt very safe all the time.
So from my experience, Ljubljana is a safe place to visit.


BUDGET TRAVEL IN LJUBLJANA PER DAY

A minimum daily budget is around 20-30 EURO. With this budget, you have an accommodation in hotels or hostels. You can find hostels which costs is 15 euros per night and with other 15 euros you can get a complete menu for lunch.
This is only a minimum budget for Ljubljana, this depends on how much you want to spend and how much luxurious you want your stay to be.

Are you looking for fun? Ljubljana is not big, so you can easily enjoy a walk that will take you to the clubs, which will run until the first light of dawn. The student population of Ljubljana helps to liven up the nightlife a lot, and not only slovenian students but also students from other parts of the world who are in Ljubljana for erasmus. During summer the tables on the river Ljubljanica are crowded by young people, while in winter they meet in elegant and not expensive places of all kinds.

TRANSPORTATION AROUND LJUBLJANA

You have many ways to go around LJUBLJANA, you can take a taxi, a bus or a uber. The starting price, starts from 0,80 to 1,50 €, the rate for each kilometer is 0,70 up to 1,70 €. The taxi from the Jože Pučnik Ljubljana airport to Ljubljana costs on average between € 20.00 and € 45.00. The cost is lower if you book the taxi by telephone.

LJUBLJANA CASTLE

The castle, situated on a hill above the city for about 900 years, is the city’s main attraction. You can reach it by funicular railway or climb it by foot. Once you are in the castle’s tower and ramparts you have the most beautiful views of the city. There are two restaurants, two museums a nightclub and a cafè pub.

  ZMAJSKI MOST (Dragon Bridge)

The dragon, a symbol of Ljubljana has been proudly shown in the city coat of arms since the late Middle Ages. Masterfully designed dragonfly sculptures at the Dragon Bridge are both terrible and magnificent at the same time. If you have missed to take a photo with either one of them, it is considered that you have not really visited Ljubljana.

CENTRAL MARKET

Designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik, the central market is the place where the locals shop, but at the same time meet and socialise. It encompasses the outdoor market and the buildings of the covered markets. Every Friday from mid-March until the end of October, the market hosts the Open Kitchen food market.

PLECNIK LJUBLJANA



The most marked image of Ljubljana is shown by the work of the world-renowned architect Jože Plečnik, who also arranged the urban planning of the central part of the city. The famous Triple Bridge belongs among Plečnik’s most famous works. You can find the legacy of this great architect in the Plečnik House, where the living areas and the architect’s personal items are preserved.

THE CHATEDRAL (Church of St Nicholas)

The cathedral of the city of Ljubljana, in which the headquarters of the Ljubljana Diocese are located, is the most important Baroque church in Ljubljana. The site where it stands was originally occupied by a Romanesque basilica from the 13th century and was built in 1701, after the first basilica was burnt down by Turks. It boasts exceptional wall paintings and other artistic heritage.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF LJUBLJANA

The permanent collection of the National Gallery comprises almost 600 pieces of Slovenian and European fine art. Among others, there are works of the Slovenian impressionists, the popular Slovenian painter Ivana Kobilca and the famous modernist painter Zoran Mušič.
